How can emotions take shape?
In her ongoing series Shaping Emotions, Andrea Kurtz translates abstract feelings such as tension, density,
movement and softness into sculptural works and reliefs.
As part of the Rotlicht Festival for Analogue Photography, Between Matter and Image extends this
exploration into experimental photography. Printed, cut, drawn over and layered, photographs become
visual traces of emotional experience.
A collaborative experiment with artist Clemens Luser asks: How can someone who knows us beyond the
visible translate what we feel inside?
On 28 November, a live sound performance by Milica Vujadinović opens a further dimension of emotional
experience through voice and sound.

In ihrer fortlaufenden Serie Shaping Emotions übersetzt Andrea Kurtz abstrakte Zustände wie Spannung,
Dichte, Bewegung und Weichheit in skulpturale Arbeiten und Reliefs.
Im Rahmen des Rotlicht – Festival für analoge Fotografie erweitert Between Matter and Image diese
Auseinandersetzung auf die experimentelle Fotografie. Ausgedruckt, zerschnitten, überzeichnet und
überlagert werden Fotografien zu visuellen Spuren emotionaler Erfahrung.
Ein gemeinsames Experiment mit dem Künstler Clemens Luser fragt: Wie kann jemand, der uns über das
Sichtbare hinaus kennt, unser Inneres übersetzen?

live voice and experimental sound, giving voice to their inner movement and atmosphere.

Featuring:
Andrea Kurtz (b. 1986 in Rijeka, Croatia) lives and works in Vienna. She studied architecture at Graz University of Technology and Design & Illustration at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). Her practice moves between sculpture, relief, painting and spatial intervention, centring on questions of corporeality, tension, surface and emotional perception. Through layering, compression, incision and fragmentation of materials such as polymers, industrial residues and rope elements, she creates structures that balance between stability and fragility. Light and shadow are integral to her works, which shift with perspective and movement. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Austria, Greece, Italy and Switzerland.
Clemens Luser (b. 1973 in Schwarzach im Pongau) is an architect and artist based in Graz, running Studio Clemens Luser at the intersection of architecture and art since 2020. Drawing is the starting point of his artistic work, which he develops further through analogue and digital tools and material experiments.
