Babel - Babble
Exhibition Details:
Babel-Babble is a multisensory exhibition, incorporating VR, audio-visual projections, and real world installation. We believe that, if translation is its own experiment, then a language mistake is not a failure or an end, but just the beginning and a new tool for studying our world. “Gesicht/Geschichte”, “Nelken/Wolken”, “Kirche/Kirsche”, and “Ziegel/Ziegen” are some of words that we have mixed up and study as its own concept: What happens, for example, if we look for the connection between “Gesicht” and “Geschichte”? We read a story, but we also read the faces of the people around us. Behind our faces are our stories. History, memory, language, and poetry come together in a personal meditation that also speaks to broader concepts of immigration, dislocation and relocation. During the exhibition, we will gather personal stories related to similar mistakes and transform viewers’ contributions into elements of the VR world.
Featuring:
Joanna Zabielska (PL/AT) arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Design, Architektur und Stadtplanung und befasst sich mit den sozialen und räumlichen Fragen der Transformation der Stadt. Mit verschiedenen Medien – von VR-Installationen über aufblasbare Skulpturen bis hin zu Kochperformances – entwickelt sie partizipative, ortsspezifische Projekte in Zusammenarbeit mit der lokalen Gemeinschaft. Nach ihrem Abschluss in Stadtplanung an der Technischen Universität Wien und in Sozialdesign an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, wo sie derzeit im Studiengang Digital Arts eingeschrieben ist, versucht sie, Design- und Kunstpraktiken miteinander zu verbinden. „Ich denke, dass jede Kunst soziales Bewusstsein hat. Es gibt keine Alternative. Was auch immer wir produzieren, enthält eine politische und soziale Aussage.“ Sie stimmt Alfredo Jaar voll und ganz zu und glaubt außerdem, dass eine partizipative und sozial engagierte Kunst zu einem tatsächlichen sozialen und politischen Wandel beitragen kann. Indem sie die von der Gesellschaft akzeptierten Beschränkungen nicht übernimmt, kann sie Alternativen aufzeigen und dazu anregen, das Gleiche auf neue Weise zu sehen. Gemäß der Aussage von Krzysztof Wodiczko: „Nur Kritik ist nicht genug, Kunst sollte auch etwas vorschlagen“. In Wien und Warschau ansässig, hat sie auch Projekte in internationalen und multikulturellen Umgebungen realisiert (in den letzten Jahren im Kaukasus – Georgien und Armenien, im Nahen Osten – Libanon, kürzlich auch in New York).
Having moved to Vienna in order to pursue art education, Sarah Wilhelmy studies Digital Art at the Angewandte Kunst, working with film, 3D animation, and remixed text. Wilhelmy translates their earlier studies in chemistry and literature into an artistic practice that focuses on details and uncovering hidden features. ⠀ They are particularly interested in psychological experiences of political and social formations whose invisibilities demand productive exploration. Prior to this, Wilhelmy lived in Virginia, USA, while producing digital and traditional media art.
